As we've said, we're going to err on the side of caution after seeing off-the-shelf shorts slapped onto the Stars of Space Jam and Looney Tunes Parodies Collection DVDs. Thankfully, the success of Warner Archive's Popeye the Sailor the 1940s Blu-rays of the past year had shown that not only was there still a paying audience for classic theatrical animation but that a viable model was in place to make similar collections of other properties cost-effective for the studio. The remastered Hare Splitter is also set to be among the initial Looney Tunes offerings on Warner's brand new streaming service, HBO Max, which will officially launch on May 27. IF you are just beginning your Looney Tunes DVD collection, then there are so many better alternatives. Now, the label's specs in the past have sometimes been incorrect when it comes to special features (especially cartoons), so they could very well end up in HD after all, BUT we would not recommend pre-ordering either title based solely on that possibility. In the meantime, though, fans can go there and enjoy brand new remastered versions of such unreleased-to-disc shorts as Robot Rabbit, Rabbit Every Monday, and Upswept Hare, among others. According to the official web site, the set is tentatively scheduled to come out in December, although elsewhere on the site it's suggesting that orders may not ship until February. So again, BE WARNED, you're either getting an unremastered SD copy or an HD copy with the "new" title sequence. Thankfully it looks like Blu-ray repeats were kept to a bare minimum and, Elmer's Candid Camera notwithstanding, only consisted of some truly essential titles. Most of the time these collections are hit and miss but, even though this collection has some cartoons they weren’t my favorite, there are so MANY on there that they include all of the really good classics. It needs to be pointed out, though, that Warner Archive's announced technical specs for each Blu-ray are indicating that the bonus cartoons are NOT in high definition. If there is any major DVD or Blu-ray news announced--or insights or updates on either Bugs or Tex--we will of course report it here after the show. Unfortunately, Warner's work on the MGM cartoons have had mixed results, especially when it comes to high definition. Unfortunately, "THAT'S ALL FOLKS!". In addition to boasting a brand new 4K scan of the feature film, the Blu-ray carries over all of the special features from the movie's original DVD release. So, we may very well get an off-the-shelf copy of Hyde on this release. And then the second disc here has fifteen cartoons because it's actually the first disc from the Golden Collection Volume Two, the third disc is from the Golden Collection Volume Three, and the fourth disc is from the Golden Collection Volume Four. Pre-order it now on Amazon. But it's errors like this that doesn't instill any confidence in the label's plans for the franchise--especially during a double anniversary year. So here it is, three months after the title was first announced to press and retail, and a month after its actual street date--and again, with no help or information or assistance from the actual studio. One such plan is the upcoming release of the Looney Tunes Holiday Triple Feature, which is now up for pre-order at the usual online stores such as Amazon. This is such a nice surprise to see more Tex Avery come out before the end of the year, especially since meanwhile there is no news about any Looney Tunes releases after the big Bugs set (despite lots of recent HBO Max remasters). So, why only the seemingly arbitrary number of seventy-four cartoons (or "episodes," a term we really wish they'd stop using) on this set? All of the 1990s-2000s TV product had already been remastered long ago for digital video, so it's not like putting Taz-Mania on disc took away any current resources that would have been better used elsewhere. Why Amazon is claiming a different, slightly later date we don't really know, but since WBShop is reaffirming the original December 1 date, we're sticking with the studio on this one. But considering Warner will now often just slap off-the-shelf copies onto discs (or at least, they will for Looney Tunes productions)--and has already done so this year--we could be in for anything. We bought them for our daughter because we feel that the quality of the animation, voice acting (Mel Blanc!!)
